Here I am nothing more than the imbecilic punchline of a hideous drunken clown, made more grotesque by the ubiquitous‎ coke bloat. Here the ripest fruits have been rendered either too bitter or too bland and altogether too disgusting for human consumption, like my thoughts: they are rancid and with a curious taste; collapsed; left out in the sun for too long, purple where red is supposed to be, burnt orange instead of yellow; decidedly unpleasant and foul yet irresistible; I keep them in my mouth despite the urge to vomit. Here there is no subtlety; only raw heat, desperate pawing and slobber. Here there is only one emotion, an emotion to be endlessly distorted and laughed at, the gnawing regret at having come at all. Here there is no you and therefore there is nothing.

I’m easily impressed by any place that sells food twenty-four hours a day, but Seven Elevens in Japan are amazing. They sell crispy chocolate sandwiches, hot buttered croissants and all variety of meat on a stick and to top it all off, their machines feed me foreign currency. The best student film (ergo, it was marginal at best) I ever shot took place in a Seven Eleven to this song. A morality tale about a cute young man who steals a bag of Cheetos and then gets run over by a car; it’s been trapped in a mangled VHS tape for a decade after being broadcast on my high school’s cctv station for a straight week, but it all came back to me when I recreated one of the perspective shots when I was playing with my phone today.

Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel…like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of it’s face and the world is like an apple whirling silently in space; like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind…

The Aokigahara Forest is a lonely place to die. So dense is the vegetation at the foot of Japan’s Mount Fuji, it is all too easy to disappear among the evergreens and never be seen again.

Each year the authorities remove as many as 100 bodies found hanging at the country’s suicide hotspot – but others can lie undiscovered for years.

After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year.

The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses.

The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently.

I was feverishly attempting to locate a famous puppet theatre in Shibuya. I had been up at 5am and had walked approximately ten miles a day for the four days previous, dangerous territory for a lethargic asthmatic. Prior to my arrival, I had been in a very fucked-up head space and was unable to concentrate on such unimportant specifics as learning a few basics of the Japanese language. The only full sentence I could say was, “gokkun shittai no,” which supposedly means, “I want to drink [it],” it being the ejaculate of whoever you are addressing, which in retrospect turned out to be less relevant than I had originally planned. Red-faced, limping, and having difficulty communicating in English, I stopped a tour guide at a fancy hotel, and started repeating, “Puppet! Puppet!” She was at first bewildered, until I mimed an expert puppeteer with my hand. She asked why I appeared to be so desperate to visit this theatre, to which I slowly responded, “I am a…puppeteer from the States…on a fact-finding expedition.” She instantly began treating me with the respect I deserved and directed me toward the theater, which was closed and would remain so until after I left the country.
